Localize Me!

Not only is local food delicious and nutritious, but supporting our local farmers helps our economy as well! Please consider helping our local economy in Raleigh by buying locally grown and produced foods. The NC 10% Campaign believes that if North Carolinians dedicate 10% of their food budget to support local food producers, related businesses and communities, we will make an impact.

Why 10 percent? This percentage is achievable and meaningful for everyone in our community! In fact, North Carolinians spend about $35 billion a year on food. If each of us spent 10% on local foods, about $3.5 billion would be available to our local economy.

As a dietitian, it is also important for me to note that North Carolina has the 12th highest rate of adult obesity in the US, and more than 1/3 of our teens are overweight. By incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets, we all can significantly improve our health and reduce long-term health care expenses.

How can you be sure that at least 10% of your food consumed is produced locally? The easiest way is to visit local farmers markets in the Raleigh area (I have posted some great markets to visit this summer!), especially those that are “grow-only” markets. Another option is to join a CSA, or purchase produce, eggs, and meats from a local farmer. Finally, be sure to check out some “farm-to-table” restaurants that support the 10% campaign.
